The New York Yankees are going to be in the playoffs but, in theory, the AL East is still up for grabs between the Yankees and the aforementioned Blue Jays, who enter Wednesday with a five-game deficit on the Yankees in the AL East.

This past weekend, the Yankees were in Milwaukee to face the Brewers, who are in a playoff hunt themselves. They are 2.5 games out of the NL Wild Card picture.

On Friday, Triple-A fill-in umpire Edwin Moscoso (who has been a fill-in since 2020 and has spent the entire season in the major leagues) was behind the plate for the first game of the series.

Moscoso, who is usually a very good plate umpire as indicated by his ranking on UmpScorecards (sixth-best entering Friday out of 76 umpires with at least 20 plates worked through September 15), struggled mightily on Friday as his plate work ended up costing the Yankees a win and it caused Yankees manager Aaron Boone to get ejected.

The final ended up being a 7-6 win for the Brewers. Per UmpScorecards, Moscoso had a run impact of 2.18 runs in favor of the Brewers (-0.93 runs for the Yankees and +1.25 runs for the Brewers).

His 90.4 percent grade on UmpScorecards was, by far, the worst on the season for him. His previous low was on May 15 between the Phillies and Dodgers, when he had a 92.5 percent.

His grading with MLB’s private scoring system (with a two-inch margin of error) would have him much higher (roughly at 97.3 percent, or six missed calls instead of 22) but as the scorecard shows, inconsistency was a big problem for Moscoso as well.

Aaron Boone’s ejection came between half innings in the ninth inning after a call that was blown in the top half. You can check out the ejection below.
