Wade Miley won’t return to Cubs in 2023

Miley is in the final year of a 3-year, $24 million deal that began when he played for the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds traded Miley to the Cubs before the 2022 season. Unfortunately, Miley was injured for most of the season.

Miley pitched in nine games, starting eight of them. He was 2-2 on the season with 37 innings pitched. He threw 52.6-percent ground ball inducing pitches, generating a 3.16 ERA.

Miley has pitched well over 150 innings per season in his decade-long career, with a few exceptions. Sure he may be slowing down after a season filled with healing from injury, but when healthy, he is capable of making significant contributions.

With the Cubs moving toward a younger team, Miley will not likely return to the Cubs via free agency. With some off-season work, the lefty could be an ideal fit for a team looking for a veteran arm for the back end of the rotation.
