Braves who won’t make NLDS roster: Kirby Yates

Yates continues to distance himself from his second Tommy John surgery, but a return in time for the postseason was never really on the table. With the Braves extra time off, however, it does give the former Padres All-Star time to heal.

If Atlanta wanted that kind of experience in the ‘pen, he’s available. However, he’d have to get some innings in via some sort of simulated rehab start beforehand. Yates returned to the Braves bullpen in August, and threw three scoreless appearances in his most recent outings before once again hitting the injured list.

At this point, Yates is more of a luxury than a realistic option. Atlanta’s bullpen is good enough as currently constructed, and blowing it up by giving a veteran former closer an opportunity doesn’t feel like a good move at this juncture.

It would be a bold decision by Snitker to call upon the 35-year-old.
