Mets roster surprises: Francisco Alvarez

Alvarez is the top prospect in all of baseball, so it’s not necessarily a shocker that he has the talent to play at this level. All that being said, Alvarez’s first big-league action was just a week ago, and the Mets are carrying three catchers on their roster in James McCann, Tomas Nido and the rookie.

Don’t expect Alvarez to start at the catcher position, as that likely belongs to McCann. However, the 20-year-old has shown some pop in his bat, as his first career hit was a 439-foot bomb just two days ago. Alvarez has the ability to make adjustments mid at-bat, which is something most players his age struggle with immensely.

“The adjustment I made was pretty much to calm the game down a little more,” Álvarez said through an interpreter. “I felt over the weekend, I was trying to get that first hit out of the way, so everything was going a little bit quicker. So I came in today with a different approach, just to be a little bit more calm and slow the game down a little more.”

Alvarez wouldn’t be the first top prospect to make an immediate impact in the playoffs. The Mets hope he can show that kind of pop on the biggest stage.
