15) MLB Power Rankings: Kansas City Royals need the right veteran to teach the kids

The free agent needs of the Kansas City Royals could go on forever. They’ve torn the roster about further at this year’s trade deadline. Now they’re left with very little other than some younger players getting extra time on the field.

This plan shouldn’t change much. What the Royals could use are the right veterans to help teach the kids a few things. It’s no free agent’s job to sign with a ball club and become a coach. This does still tend to happen at times. Those good locker room guys available without a team would be fine and affordable additions to the Royals. It doesn’t quite matter what position they play. The Royals are far from the postseason.

14) MLB Power Rankings: Pittsburgh Pirates need a Jose Quintana they can win with, not trade away

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in a similar spot as the Royals. Signing big free agents is both illogical and not needed. What would one star do for this club? They are battling on a low payroll. They could still benefit from making another signing like the Jose Quintana one.

Instead of making this be a player they send to a contender within the division mid-year, it would be nice to see the Pirates sign a Quintana-type and actually make some noise. The Pirates could use a successful starting pitcher that becomes more than a rental.

13) MLB Power Rankings: Cincinnati Reds need free agent middle infielders

It will be interesting to see what the Cincinnati Reds do this offseason. They are in a rebuild but are a little more ahead than some other teams in the progress. If they do sign anyone, adding some middle infielders would make sense.

The Reds had the worst WAR on the league from their second basemen at -1.9. To make sure the middle infield was an issue, they also had the worst WAR at shortstop at -2.7. Their many young players seem to rove around a little too often. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they had a -2.7 in center field as well.
