The Phillies shocked Atlanta Braves fans by stealing Game 1 of the NLDS on the road. Afterwards, Jose Alvarado put Guillermo Heredia on blast.

Heredia was apparently the Atlanta player chirping at Alvarado during the Braves attempted ninth-inning comeback.

The Braves got within one run thanks to a Matt Olson home run before Nick Castellanos put any come-from-behind victory thoughts to bed.

Alvarado’s numbers speak for themselves, especially of late, and he was arguably the Phillies best relief pitcher heading into the playoffs. Heredia’s attempt to throw him off his game did not work in the end, as the Phils were able to take Game 1.

Phillies: Jose Alvarado calls out Braves’ Guillermo Heredia

“I said hey, [be quiet],” Alvarado said, per The Athletic’s Alex Coffey. “Everybody thinks, I want to attack Alvarado, but right now, no one can change my mentality. Nobody. I’m focused. When we come into the game, I come to hit the target. I don’t care who is hitting. Strike one, strike two and good luck.”

While this situation appears to be contained for now, Alvarado speaking with Heredia before the game could go one of two ways. Either Heredia will be receptive to what Alvarado is saying, given the two shared a clubhouse with the Rays back in 2019, or it could backfire.

In the end, there are more important storylines to digest in this series. Alvarez would prefer to put this matter behind him, but it was worth airing said grievances to let the Braves know he can’t be messed with on the mound — at least not the way he’s currently pitching.
