NFL rumors: Could Browns bench Jacoby Brissett?

The wait for Deshaun Watson continues in Cleveland.

The allegations against Watson are heinous, and it should ALWAYS be mentioned that he remains engaged in legal battles as it pertains to the sexual assault and harassment claims towards him.

Watson will be eligible to return for the Browns after his 11-game suspension is served. Until then, Cleveland hoped it could rely on a stable veteran like Brissett. Thus far, he’s been unstable, at best.

A game manager like Brissett should not be asked to do too much. Cleveland has a great running game behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. David Njoku and Amari Cooper make for decent enough weapons that when Brissett is called upon to pass, he can do so confidently.

Joshua Dobbs looms behind Brissett, and he’s not exactly a savvy veteran option to turn to. But can he be worse than Brissett has been lately? The majority of Kevin Stefanski’s playbook should involve basic play-action passes and turning to hand the ball off. We’re not sure what everyone is missing here.

Brissett has earned the benefit of the doubt, if only because the Browns are out of options. But he shouldn’t get too comfortable.
