1. Monster Cubs free agent target: Jose Abreu

Going from one Chicago team to the other isn’t rare. The Cubs and Chicago White Sox even make trades with each other far more often than we see from teams like the New York Mets and New York Yankees or Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers. The shared city connection hasn’t stopped them from directly helping each other before. When Jose Abreu goes from the White Sox to the Cubs this offseason, we shouldn’t hold it against him.

The White Sox have had every opportunity to sign Abreu to an extension. Instead, they seem to have a different idea of what to do at first base or the DH spot. We can save our guessing for another day. Today, it’s all about Abreu signing with the crosstown rivals and continuing to produce at Wrigley Field.

The 2020 American League MVP was good again in 2022 but with far less power than we have seen before. He hit over .300 yet saw his home run totals drop in half. The Cubs would be getting an aging hitter yet one they could plug in at first base or the DH spot on an everyday basis.

Signing Abreu now does mean the Cubs should be aggressive in other areas. He may remain in the league for a few more seasons, but signs of a decline could be even greater next year.
