Dansby Swanson replacements: Braves prospect Vaughn Grissom

Could Dansby Swanson’s replacement already be on the Braves roster?

Vaughn Grissom was Atlanta’s minor leaguer of the year for the 2022 season, and rightly so. He dominated at every level he was asked to play. Grissom can play both second base and shortstop, and he’s the team’s top-ranked prospect.

In similar fashion to how the Yankees tabbed Anthony Volpe as their shortstop of the future last offseason — explaining their lack of interest on the free agent market — the Braves could do the same with Grissom.

Atlanta views Grissom in the same light as, say, Michael Harris. He’s part of the Braves future, one way or another, and they could even lock him up long-term before he makes much of a major-league impact. The Braves were so confident in Grissom that they started him in Game 3 of the NLDS.

FanSided’s Kevin Henry pointed to Grissom as a potential replacement earlier this week:

"“Atlanta may have the internal answer at shortstop already in place with Vaughn Grissom. Making his MLB debut on August 10, Grissom primarily filled in for the injured Ozzie Albies at second base. However, with Albies set to return next season, Grissom could slide over to shortstop, a position where he played twice with the Braves this year, including the regular-season finale at Miami.”"

Grissom would be a cheaper replacement, and allow Atlanta to play with more money to improve its rotation, among other needs.
