2) Padres starting pitcher Mike Clevinger – Baltimore Orioles

Mike Clevinger has been a good starting pitcher in the major leagues … but he has rarely been healthy. 2022 has been his healthiest season since 2018 as he made 23 appearances (22 starts) in the regular season. Since making his MLB debut in 2016, he has only appeared in more than 126 innings one time (2018).

In 2020, he made eight starts in the shortened season and he missed all of 2021. After he was a complete disaster in the NLCS, the Padres are unlikely to re-sign him on the free agent market this offseason.

The Baltimore Orioles are a team that could be interested in him. Their starters had a 3.97 ERA, which was 17th in the sport but they lacked a veteran presence. They may be able to get Clevinger on a one- or two-year deal to prove that he can be healthy. For the Orioles perspective, a contract with Clevinger could be similar to what they had with Nelson Cruz in 2014.

Cruz had been an All-Star with Texas in 2013 but he was great on a one-year deal for the Orioles in 2014, en route to the ALCS and coming in seventh in AL MVP voting himself before moving on to some great years in Seattle.
