What Aaron Judge’s teammates said about his looming free agency
With Aaron Judge hitting free agency, his Yankees teammates are wishing him well while hoping he remains with them in New York.
Aaron Judge has spent his entire career thus far in pinstripes. He could trade them in for a new uniform anytime soon.
It all comes down to whether or not the Yankees are willing to meet his contract demands while outbidding just about every other ambitious team in the league.
We know what Judge is saying about his impending free agency. But what about the rest of the team?
Judge’s current teammates in New York hope he gets his money and stays a Yankee.
What Anthony Rizzo, Gerrit Cole and DJ LeMahieu said about Aaron Judge
DJ LeMahieu, who is under contract with the Yankees through 2027, may have lightened the fears of fans with his response to Judge’s situation.
“I’d be shocked if he’s not back. But you just never know how that goes,” DJ LeMahieu said per the NY Post. “I feel like he definitely wants to be here. But when it becomes a business, it changes a lot.”
Anthony Rizzo clearly thinks the Yankees should shell out whatever money it takes to keep Judge.
“The money he’s brought to this organization, to this franchise, to the game of baseball — I’m sure just the money alone in September of him chasing 62 was enough to easily pay,” Rizzo said. “There’s plenty of money in this game to be spread around. I think for him, whatever he gets is going to be astronomical and he deserves it.”
Gerrit Cole picked up a pretty astronomical contract from the Yankees just a few years ago. He knows what Judge is in for.
“As far as what the future holds between the negotiations, I’ll just be a supportive friend and reiterate everything he means to us and the support and the talent and the type of player that he is is just so special,” Cole said. “He deserves to enjoy this courting process and he deserves everything that’s coming for him.”
Rizzo is rooting for a best-of-all-worlds scenario for Judge and New York.
“I hope it’s in a Yankee uniform, for him and for the game, for baseball in general,” Rizzo said. “We’re seeing people jump ship so much that especially with this uniform on, just being a fan, I think the fitting thing would be for him to be doing a press conference and receiving not only the money he deserves but also the captain title that comes with it.”
That would make Yankees fans very happy.
