College football power rankings: Which of the 6 remaining undefeated teams is superior?
By John Buhler
Tennessee has many big wins, but not by the biggest of margins up to this point
I don’t think anybody in their right mind would have the Tennessee Volunteers out of the top three in this discussion. However, it remains to be seen if they have what it takes to run the gauntlet. Tennessee has wins over four ranked teams at the time (at No. 17 Pittsburgh, No. 20 Florida, at No. 25 LSU, No. 3 Alabama). This offense is amazing, but the remaining schedule is unforgiving.
Although Missouri and Vanderbilt are two of their final three regular-season games, Tennessee has games against three more ranked division rivals in No. 19 Kentucky this weekend, at No. 1 Georgia next weekend and at South Carolina on Nov. 19. Kentucky is more than capable of playing spoiler. At Georgia is a death sentence for most teams. And at South Carolina could be challenging.
With Tennessee, the Vols are going to score points. Where it gets a little concerning is the defense will give up points, too. If you win by the shootout, you can also die by the shootout. One of those three teams could knock them off. Should they get to Atlanta over Georgia, Tennessee would have to play a strong SEC West winner. That looks like the winner of Alabama at Ole Miss down the line.
Tennessee may have what it takes to win the national title, but the Volunteers will have to prove it.
