Every free agent fans should be watching on the Astros, Phillies during the World Series
Phillies possible free agents: Jean Segura out after this season?
- Second baseman Jean Segura (team option)
- Starting pitcher Aaron Nola (team option)
- Pitcher Zach Eflin (mutual option)
- Starting pitcher Kyle Gibson
- Starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard
- Relief pitcher Brad Hand
- Relief pitcher Corey Knebel
For the Phillies, they will have to address their starting rotation in a big way this offseason, as many as four starting pitchers could be free agents. For that reason, the Phillies are likely to exercise their team option with Aaron Nola.
He started Game 1 for the Phillies in the World Series and, like Verlander, he struggled. He allowed five runs in 4.1 innings. But in the regular season, he went 11-13 with a 3.25 ERA in 32 starts. He averaged more than 6.1 innings per start with a 125 ERA+, a 2.58 FIP, a 0.961 WHIP, an NL-best 1.3 walks, and 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
The bullpen, which has been a concern for the Phillies for years, could see some new faces with Brad Hand and Corey Knebel likely leaving the club after the season. Knebel, though, has been on the injured list since mid-August with a strained lat/torn shoulder capsule.
Many of their position players are younger players (like Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott) or were signed last offseason (like Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos). As a result, their only position player that could be a free agent is Jean Segura. However, the Phillies control that since they have a $17 million team option.
