Projected College Football Playoff rankings after Week 9: No. 8-7

8. Oregon Ducks

Coming off of the Ducks’ big win over UCLA, there was always the possibility of a hangover game looming for Dan Lanning’s Oregon and we saw that early on the road against an obviously inferior Cal team. They fell behind early but that’s when Bo Nix and his cohorts woke themselves up and proved that they were the much better team on the field this week.

Nix continued his huge campaign with a six-touchdown performance that included three passing and three rushing scores. Meanwhile, the defense showed its prowess, admittedly against a pretty paltry Golden Bears attack, en route to an emphatic 42-24 victory. Oregon’s ceiling in the rankings right now is limited thanks to how badly they lost to Georgia to start the season, but there’s still a good chance to move up going forward with how well the Ducks have played.

7. Alabama Crimson Tide

When it comes to the College Football Playoff rankings, the truth of the matter is that quality wins and not having a 1 or 2 in the loss column. So while Alabama has been coming in at No. 6 in the AP Top 25 in the aftermath of their loss to Tennessee, the fact of the matter is that it’s not hard to see the Crimson Tide actually getting docked a bit in the CFP rankings and falling behind the six remaining undefeated teams in the country.

As crazy as it sounds, Alabama doesn’t have a win over a single team that was ranked coming into Week 9 and also has the loss to Tennessee and the near-loss to Texas hanging over their heads. When you match that up against the likes of TCU and others, it doesn’t measure up and I see the committee taking that into account when they release their first rankings of the season.
