HOUSTON, TEXAS – OCTOBER 28: A wild pitch bounces away from J.T. Realmuto #10 of the Philadelphia Phillies as Aledmys Diaz #16 of the Houston Astros bats in the 10th inning in Game One of the 2022 World Series at Minute Maid Park on October 28, 2022 in Houston, Texas. Designated hitter Trey Mancini was already 0-for-4 on the night, so manager Dusty Baker inserted pinch hitter Aledmys Diaz into the lineup with two outs and two men on in the bottom of the 10th.

However, the move turned into one of the more interesting at-bats of the evening, as Diaz tried to reach base by being hit by a pitch. While Diaz was struck by a David Robertson pitch, it was ruled that he leaned into the pitch. That rule switched the call from hit-by-pitch to a ball.

While Diaz wasn’t able to reach by being hit by a pitch, it was clear he was trying to get on base and extend the Houston rally in any way he could. That’s why it was a bit surprising when, with a 3-1 count, he swung at a pitch by Robertson instead of trying to work the count and extend the inning. By swinging at the pitch, Diaz grounded out to third, ending the game and ensuring the Philadelphia win.

While Diaz only had one at-bat in the Fall Classic, it certainly was an eventful one that ended up in disappointment for the home fans.
