Philadelphia Phillies free agent target: Carlos Rodon

A bigger name for the Phillies to go after is Carlos Rodon. Maybe he grew as sick of Gabe Kapler as the city of Philadelphia did. Rodon spent this past year with the San Francisco Giants. He was 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 31 starts. He was on a bit of a “prove it” deal following an awesome 2021 campaign with the Chicago White Sox. Rodon certainly proved himself. He led the league with a 2.25 FIP and 12 strikeouts per 9.

Rodon is an opt out candidate who should be turning down $22.5 million for the 2023 season. Because of his success this past year, many expect him to capitalize on the clause in the contract and seek a new deal with the Giants or any other team willing to reward his wallet.

A lefty whose postseason experience isn’t so great and also includes a bloodletting at the bats of the Astros in 2021, he’s someone on the rise and a pitcher the Phillies can arm themselves with for a few seasons. He turns 30 in December and would be a strong piece to have behind Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola next season and beyond—if those two also remain.

Rodon would come at a huge cost for the Phillies in free agency. However, with much of the starting lineup already in place, this can be their big splash as they look to improve an area of great need on the roster.
