MLB Power Rankings: Predicting the best free agent each team will sign
By Tim Boyle
15) MLB Power Rankings: Toronto Blue Jays sign Taijaun Walker
The Toronto Blue Jays aren’t losing a whole lot in free agency this winter. Somewhere they could upgrade is in the starting rotation. A reunion with Taijuan Walker, who pitched with them briefly in 2020, is the biggest move they’ll make in free agency. He’s somewhat young and a nice piece they can have on the roster as they take another crack at it in 2023. Then again in 2024 if things don’t work out.
14) MLB Power Rankings: Los Angeles Dodgers re-sign Tyler Anderson
Tyler Anderson will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers. There it is. That’s the prediction. The biggest free agent the Dodgers make this offseason is to retain one of their best starting pitchers from the last season.
It’s not great, but don’t sleep on them. Expect the Dodgers to add pieces around what they already have and target a major trade candidate instead. They’ll also, as they frequently seem to do, find a hidden gem on the free agent market.
13) MLB Power Rankings: Arizona Diamondbacks sign J.D. Martinez
The Arizona Diamondbacks have the makings of being a pretty good team next year. A deeper dip into free agency this offseason could drastically improve them. The bullpen needs to be rebuilt in a big way and they could use some offense. A reunion with J.D. Martinez could be beneficial to bettering the DH spot in the lineup. It’s a lighter move than most teams but a wise one to show the fans they’re taking a step forward and not just side-to-side.
12) MLB Power Rankings: San Diego Padres sign Anthony Rizzo
Anthony Rizzo is heading back to the San Diego Padres. It’s fine if you don’t remember him ever playing with them. He hit only .141 for them in his first 49 games back in 2011 prior to getting traded. The Padres could use a home run threat at first base. Rizzo can give them precisely that while playing some first base and DH’ing.
11) MLB Power Rankings: Atlanta Braves sign Joc Pederson
The Atlanta Braves love to lock up their young players to contracts early on which means free agency is where they find missing pieces. This offseason, it’s a return for Joc Pederson which highlights their moves in this department. Atlanta doesn’t have a whole lot of openings on the roster. Expect them to sign Pederson and maybe a few similar-level players while maybe also pulling off a blockbuster trade.
