Redrafting the 2017 NBA Draft: Which teams fix their mistakes?
Derrick White’s status as spot starter/sixth or seventh or eighth man in Boston doesn’t really do justice to his talent. Such is life on the East’s foremost contender. White was the Spurs’ best guard for a good minute before Dejounte Murray’s breakout and his ability to contribute on both sides of the ball lands him comfortably in the top 10 of this re-draft.
While White’s scoring limitations have caught up to him over the years, he is a respectable 3-point shooter who can average 10-15 points per game when given the opportunity. He slashes to the rim effectively and is able to work off the ball, using his burst to beat defenders backdoor for easy finishes around the rim.
The greatest attribute of White’s offensive game is his facilitation. As a secondary ball-handler and connective passer, White excels. He doesn’t have the assist numbers one might associate with a great point guard, but in the right context, White’s smarts and ancillary skills are quite effective.
Of course, what really cements White in the top 10 is not offense. It’s defense. He’s on the short list of best defensive guards in the NBA. White has the length (6-foot-8 wingspan) to guard multiple positions and the dogged determination to stonewall the NBA’s most explosive playmakers.
