Ranking the 3 most important Cubs free agent targets
By Tim Boyle
1) Cubs free agent target Trea Turner might be the best buy of all
Correa had a good year in Minnesota, but Trea Turner had an even better one with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit .298/.343/.466 while smacking 21 home runs and driving in 100. As if that wasn’t enough, Turner stole 27 bases.
Turner won’t turn 30 until the middle of the 2023 season so while age isn’t as much of a luxury as it is with Correa, it’s not something to be concerned about. In fact, because of his age, we should expect Turner to sign for fewer years, maybe at a higher AAV given hope superb he has been in his career.
Like Correa, Turner has managed to stay much healthier in recent years compared to his early days. A speedster who has developed into more of a power hitter, there isn’t anything Turner is unable to do. He would slot in immediately as the new leadoff hitter for the Cubs, or possibly even become a uniquely gifted number three hitter.
Turner could even be a candidate to play second base if the Cubs feel Hoerner is the better defender. That’s a problem to work out later. The important thing is to get his bat in the lineup.
The Cubs are a team in need of a major addition this offseason. Turner, thanks to the things he does so well, would be the best one they can possibly make.
