Astros: Anthony Rizzo and 3 other Yankees free agents worth signing
By Tim Boyle
3) Astros can steal another Yankees bullpen piece by signing Chad Green
Chad Green has been a staple in the Yankees bullpen for many years. From Joe Girardi to Aaron Boone, he has been relied upon and trusted. Tommy John Surgery ultimately cost him all but 15 innings of the 2022 season. Now in recovery, he’s someone teams could look into about signing and stashing for later in 2023 — or possibly not until 2024.
Urgency to sign Green isn’t quite there because of his expected availability. He’s someone that might simply hang out rehabbing on his own until fully recovered. However, if the Astros want to get ahead of things, signing Green this offseason and including an option for 2024 could end up being an advanced move to secure themselves a good bullpen arm for the future.
Recovering from Tommy John Surgery is no guarantee. Green, who turns 32 in May, definitely went under the knife at the worst time considering his free agency status. In a market where he was fully healthy, he might already have a deal.
Rizzo, Benintendi, Britton, and even Green are all possible fits for the Astros. If Houston can steal even just one away from the Yankees, it’s a blow to New York. Their primary focus right now is on keeping Aaron Judge.
Meanwhile, the team that continually eliminates them one step away from the World Series is already aiming at their other free agent slugger. The Astros can do even more and chase those other three.
