The 2022 World Cup is here. Who won the last iteration of the tournament in 2018, when it was held in Russia?

Within a few short weeks we’ll know which country has come out on top as champions of the 2022 World Cup, which is being held in Qatar.

Much like this year’s tournament is the first being held in the Middle East, the venue in 2018 was a first as well. Russia had never hosted the tournament before 2018.

Which country won the last World Cup in 2018?

France was the winner of the last World Cup in 2018. They beat Croatia in the Final match 4-2.

Russia, the host country, lost to Croatia in the quarterfinals.

En route to the final in 2018, France beat Argentina, Uruguay, and Belgium before taking on Croatia. Croatia and Argentina (France won 4-3) were the only countries to score on France in the elimination games.

Croatia held possession for 61 percent of the final game, making France’s win even more impressive. Croatia also had nearly double the number of shots France did, though France had three more shots on target than Croatia.

Prior to 2018, France last won the World Cup exactly 20 years before.

Fans may remember that during the 2018 World Cup Final a protest staged by members of the political performance art group “Pussy Riot” in which members of the band entered the field of play and stopped the game for a short period of time to bring attention to their demands for the Russian government.

Qatar being the host city has some wondering if similar protests will be staged in this year’s World Cup given that there are disagreements with the country’s treatment of migrant workers and members of the LGBTQ community.

This year, France finds itself in Group D with Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia.
