Just days after MLB investigated a rumored ‘respective relationship’ between the Mets and Yankees to ensure Aaron Judge wouldn’t end up in Queens, the Bronx Bombers have shown interest in Jacob deGrom.

MLB’s investigation into the rumored Yankees and Mets agreement turned into a giant ball of nothing in a matter of days. Had it been true, it would have revealed some sort of collusion between the two sides, as FanSided’s Scott Rogust suggests:

"“Sources told (Ken) Rosenthal that the article in question caught the attention of the MLB Player’s Association, and they contacted the league to investigate whether owners Hal Steinbrenner and Steve Cohen had “improper communication” with one another, and if they violated the collective bargaining agreement. The aforementioned SNY article mentioned that both Cohen and Steinbrenner both have a “mutually respective relationship” and were not expected to change that by fighting for Judge in free agency.”"

Whether it’s to save face or not, that New York ‘agreement’ appears to only have been for Judge’s looming free agency. The Yankees have reportedly asked for Jacob deGrom’s medicals, showing interest in the star right-hander.

Does Jacob deGrom make sense for the Yankees?

New York’s rotation is a pressing need, as they could stand to lose Jameson Taillon, among others. Adding a pitcher of deGrom’s caliber would instantly provide an answer to the looming question of what this team will do to address yet another disappointing postseason appearance.

The Yanks were swept out of the postseason by the Houston Astros, who went on to win the World Series. This prompted the Yankees to look at all possible upgrades, especially in the starting rotation. Their interest in Justin Verlander is well-documented.

The obvious issue with signing a player like deGrom is his injury history. Hal Steinbrenner has plenty of money to play with, but $40 million+ a season for a pitcher who could seemingly break down at any moment is a significant risk.

New York’s top priority will be re-signing Aaron Judge, but should they fail to do so, expect them to use some of that money to vastly improve the roster rather than simply folding their hand. Signing deGrom is just one option that makes sense.
