Texas State Bobcats: Jake Spavital -> G.J. Kinne
After four losing seasons in a row, Texas State decided it was time to move on from Jake Spavital as the Bobcats head coach. The former Texas A&M, California and West Virginia offensive coordinator went 4-8 (2-6) in his final season at Texas State. He leaves San Marcos with a 13-35 overall record in four years and an awful 9-23 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. It was past time.
Despite his alma mater Tulsa being open as well, Incarnate Word head coach G.J. Kinne will be taking over at Texas State. The former Golden Hurricane quarterback played professionally from 2012 to 2016 before getting into coaching. He was the offensive coordinator at Hawaii and UCF before taking over at Incarnate Word. Kinne went 10-1 in his one year at Incarnate Word in 2022.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane: Philip Montgomery -> Kevin Wilson
After a 5-7 season, Tulsa has decided to part ways with longtime Golden Hurricane head coach Philip Montgomery. Tulsa made it to the AAC Championship Game in 2020 only two seasons ago. However, a fifth losing campaign in eight years was enough for Tulsa to go ahead with the move. Montgomery went 43-53 overall and 28-34 in the AAC during his time with the Golden Hurricane.
After not being able to come to terms with Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom, Tulsa turned its attention to hire offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson away from Ohio State. Since the Buckeyes are in the College Football Playoff, one would expect for Wilson to stay on Ryan Day’s staff until their season has reached conclusion. Wilson did lead Indiana before from 2011 to 2016.
Western Michigan Broncos: Tim Lester -> Lance Taylor
Despite only suffering his first losing season in six years, Western Michigan moved on from Tim Lester on Nov. 28. The Broncos went 5-7. Over the last six seasons, Western Michigan went 37-32 overall and 26-20 in MAC play. However, WMU never played in the conference title bout or won the MAC West under Lester. The Broncos had won the Group of Five before Lester under P.J. Fleck.
After taking some time to thoroughly go through the process, Western Michigan is hiring former Louisville offensive coordinator Lance Taylor to be the Broncos’ next head coach. WMU wanted its next head coach to be a high-energy guy. Taylor has been getting rave reviews everywhere he has been, whether that has been at Louisville, Notre Dame Stanford or during his run over in the NFL.
