College football coaching carousel tracker: Who’s fired, who’s hired for 2023? [UPDATED]

UNLV Rebels: Marcus Arroyo -> Barry Odom
It comes as quite a shock, but despite almost achieving bowl eligibility in year three, UNLV moved from Marcus Arroyo. The Rebels went 5-7 this season and 3-5 in the Mountain West. Although he only went 7-23 overall and 5-17 in conference play, this one was odd for sure. UNLV has a bad history as a program. Arroyo had UNLV on the uptick in one of the better Group of Five leagues.
UNLV kept this one pretty close to the vest, while there were rumors circulating about other notable candidates for the gig, the Rebels are reportedly hiring Arkansas Razorbacks defensive coordinator Barry Odom to be their next head coach. Prior to reinventing himself as one of the Hogs’ star coordinators, Odom did lead his alma mater Missouri right after Gary Pinkel had retired.
Liberty Flames: Hugh Freeze -> Jamey Chadwell
After four years at Liberty, Hugh Freeze is back in the SEC. He takes over at Auburn, a program in dire need of some unity. Many of the top candidates for Auburn had some character flaws, but new athletic director John Cohen wanted a winner above all else. He got one in Freeze, who went 34-15 at Liberty. Defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge will serve as the interim for the bowl game.
It was rumored to be coming together during championship weekend, but Liberty made it official on Sunday, as former Coastal Carolina Chanticleers head coach Jamey Chadwell will take over the Flames now that Hugh Freeze has departed for Auburn. Chadwell went 39-22 over for seasons at Coastal Carolina. This may seem like a bit of a lateral move, but Liberty has outstanding facilities.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers: Jamey Chadwell -> Tim Beck
With Chadwell leaving for Liberty after the Chanticleers lost the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game to the Troy Trojans, it remains to be seen what will become of the program he helped build up. Chadwell made the Chanticleers semi-nationally relevant in 2020. It may be one of the newer FBS programs of note, but Chadwell has shown to everyone that you can win there.
After news of Chadwell’s departure for Liberty, Coastal Carolina acted incredibly swiftly and is expected to hire North Carolina State offensive coordinator Tim Beck to replace him. The passing game has been a big reason why Dave Doeren’s Wolfpack program has ascended in ACC play in recent years. Beck now goes to one of the most underrated jobs across entire the Group of Five.
