3 NFL quarterbacks who played like they should be benched in Week 12: Russell Wilson, Broncos
Russell Wilson going to the bench without an injury isn’t going to happen. They can’t control their NFL Draft destiny, since they moved their first-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Wilson and their current first-rounder came from the Miami Dolphins in the Bradly Chubb trade. So, it’s going to be Wilson starting until he can’t.
Regardless of that, Wilson was bad on Sunday.
Facing a Carolina Panthers team that is on its third starting quarterback in three weeks, the Broncos had no answers for them. Sam Darnold was efficient enough for Carolina, throwing for 164 yards and a touchdown (11-of-19 on pass attempts). Granted, Denver’s defense could only stop so much, especially since Carolina had possession of the football for over 37 minutes.
Wilson’s interaction with defensive lineman Mike Purcell caught the attention of the NFL world. As Purcell walked onto the sideline, he yelled at Wilson. That was downplayed postgame.
On the day, Wilson completed 19 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown on 35 attempts. He was sacked three times for a loss of 17 yards.
The Broncos were supposed to be contending for a playoff spot this season, but find themselves sitting at 3-8 on the season. The offense has only put up more than 20 points twice this season. In any other situation, Wilson would have been benched. But as mentioned before, the fate of their first-round pick doesn’t lie in their hands.
