The USMNT nearly scored a second goal in the first half thanks to Tim Weah, but he was called offside by a hair. Iran avoided further deficit.

The United States is one win away from advancing to the knockout round in the 2022 World Cup.

Facing the same Iran team which lost 6-0 to England in their opening match, it would be a pretty huge disappointment for the U.S. not to defeat the Iranians, even if just by a goal.

While Christian Pulisic got the USMNT off to a resounding start, Tim Weah nearly brought the house down in the final minute of the first half. Weah was played in on what originally looked like an onside play. The official, however, raised his flag, signaling that Weah was in fact offside.

As it turns out, Weah was just inches away from securing a second goal for the United States. He held up his run, but he needed to do so for an extra second, according to former USMNT international Stu Holden.

Well, if the former U.S. international says Weah was offside, then I guess we have to drop it, don’t we?

The United States can still advance with a victory, and as things currently stand, they’re in position to do so entering the second half.

A second goal is key if the U.S. can find it, as it would put some separation in between themselves and a pesky Iran squad, who still has something left to play for.

By no means is this game over, the USMNT cannot play with that assumption. Weah was oh so close to creating some comfort.
