Teams to watch closely during MLB Winter Meetings: Boston Red Sox

The drama surrounding Xander Bogaerts reached another level on Wednesday with reports coming out that the All-Star shortstop had severed ties with Boston, then his agent responded later in the day shooting that rumor down.

Securing Bogaerts is one of the many things still on the Boston to-do list this offseason, and his decision could create a ripple effect in one direction or the other. It’s likely we will have a better idea of which way the Bogaerts winds are blowing by the time the meetings in San Diego start, which could set the tone for a winter where the Red Sox are already smarting after missing out on Jose Abreu.

Our own Robert Murray has written that a decision on Bogaerts may not happen until Trea Turner and Carlos Correa find a home. If that’s the case, Boston’s Chaim Bloom could pivot to filling another need, of which there are many, including pitching.

An announcement of some kind could well be needed during the MLB Winter Meetings in order to keep the Red Sox faithful from thinking it will be another lost season at Fenway in 2023.
