New York Mets could replace Jacob deGrom with Justin Verlander

There are few options available on the market that could actually be an upgrade for the Mets over deGrom, but Justin Verlander certainly fits into that category.

Coming off his third Cy Young Award, Verlander has the Mets along with New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Houston Astros as potential suitors. Whichever team lands him is expected to pay a high price for his services, with the 39-year-old right-hander looking for a contract similar to the one that the Mets handed out to Max Scherzer last offseason (three years and $130 million).

Could the Mets actually make a deal to have Scherzer and Verlander at the front of their rotation? If New York was entertaining the thought of bringing back deGrom, it would make sense that they would be willing to spend on someone who has the pedigree of Verlander.

While plenty of other pitchers could fill deGrom’s spot in the rotation, Verlander is one of the very few that could make the rotation even scarier on paper than it was in 2022.
