2. Whether it’s Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts or Dansby Swanson, Cubs need to land a star SS

If you name one of the big four shortstops that hit free agency this offseason, they have almost surely been connected to the Cubs at one point or another over the past year. But with Trea Turner locking up a deal that lands him in Philadelphia, there are only three options now for the club to pursue. And with the apparent edict of the offseason, they have to come into the 2023 season with one of those guys.

Turner, in all honesty, might’ve been the best overall option for Chicago as they look to shore up the middle of the infield opposite Nico Hoerner. With him now off the table, however, the club really has their pick of who they believe is the best fit and, in the same vein, who provides what the team is looking for from the position to the highest degree.

In some form or another, there have been insiders who have predicted that each of the three remaining players would end up playing in Wrigley. In fact, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi recently called the Cubs the “favorites” to land Carlos Correa. But someone like Xander Bogaerts or Dansby Swanson could offer the same impact while being more cost effective.

Really, it’s a matter of preference, but it’s not something that the Chicago front office can mill about for too long. The market for all three star shortstops still on the market is quite lucrative and the Cubbies need to make sure they land their guy.
