Deshaun Watson’s return to NFL football has not been what the Browns want

On the whole, it actually wasn’t the worst day at the office for Deshaun Watson as the problematic quarterback made his second start for the Cleveland Browns on the heels of his suspension ending last week and debuting against the Texans. He went 26-of-42 for 276 yards with a touchdown and an interception while also rushing for 33 yards.

Watson is also just 1-1 as a starter for the Browns thus far, which isn’t all that bad considering the defensive issues that Cleveland is forced to endure week after week. But at the same time, the totality of the situation with Watson taking over as the starting quarterback doesn’t look good for this franchise.

The touchdown pass to David Njoku on Sunday against the Bengals is the only offensive touchdown that Cleveland has scored since Watson has taken over. Yes, the team scored 27 points against Houston, but did so off of two pick-sixes and a punt return touchdown.

Cleveland’s offense simply hasn’t had any consistent rhythm since Watson took over. There are some nice plays, but the fact of the matter is that too many drives have stalled and the quarterback is making too many bad decisions consistently. He’s not playing like a player worth $230 million guaranteed.

Perhaps this is a bit of karmic repercussion for the Browns. Even still, you could make a strong argument that the offense was just flat-out better when Jacoby Brissett started through the first three-quarters of the year.
