3 teams that could lure Tom Brady away from the Buccaneers in 2023
By Morgan Jayne
Rumors have been swirling of a potential Brady return to the New England Patriots. Brady spent 20 seasons with the Patriots, which resulted in six Super Bowl Championships.
Brady left New England in 2020 after head coach Bill Belichick declined to give him a long-term deal. The Patriots then drafted quarterback Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, and he went on to have an impressive rookie season. Although his productivity has declined this season, mainly due to poor playcalling, Jones has proven he can play at a high level.
While it seems unlikely that the Patriots will give up on Jones so quickly in his career, there is a possibility that the Patriots could pursue Brady in hopes of a short-term reunion.
According to NBC Sports NFL analyst Peter King, Brady had expressed interest in joining the Colts during his free agency. However, Indianapolis decided to sign former Los Angeles Charger Phillip Rivers.
With the Indianapolis Colts seemingly revolving door of veteran quarterbacks, Phillip Rivers in 2020 and Matt Ryan in 2022, signing Brady would undoubtedly add to their trend.
Brady, as a Colt, would be interesting given the Patriots and Colts had quite the rivalry when Peyton Manning, former on-field rival and off-the-field friend of Brady, led the Colts’ offense. The Colts were the team who started the “deflategate” allegations against the Patriots, which resulted in a four-game suspension for Brady in the 2016 season; however, that same season ended with Brady and the Patriots winning their fifth Super Bowl.
Perhaps Brady has decided to let bygones be bygones and has moved on from the deflategate situation and would be willing to sign with the Colts if they choose to pursue him.
While the 2022 season is ongoing, there will be no official word for what Brady will do next year. He could very well retire and walk away from on-field action for good, or he could choose to play however many more seasons he desires.
