Could the Braves trade for Willy Adames?

Trading for Willy Adames seems unlikely at this point, but give it a few weeks.

The Brewers and Braves were just involved in the trade that sent Sean Murphy to Atlanta. The Braves dealt William Contreras to Milwaukee, but could not get the Brew Crew to part ways with their star shortstop, as Adames remains a critical part of their future.

Milwaukee is never an obvious buyer or seller. Previously this offseason, they traded away Kolten Wong. On Monday, they added an All-Star catcher on the cheap in Contreras. They’re truly unpredictable.

An Adames trade would not happen this offseason, in all likelihood. If anything, the trade deadline would open up some possibilities for the Brewers should they wish.

Adames is just 26 years old, and slashed 238/.298/.458 last year with 31 home runs — a career high. If the Brewers were to sell him, it should be now, as his value is at an all-time high. But if they wish to build around Adames, making him their long-term fit at shortstop, then it makes no sense.

It looks like Milwaukee is aiming for the latter, and hopes to make a playoff run in the process. The Braves should put a pin in Adames…for now.
