White Sox rumors: Trey Mancini

Trey Mancini’s market value is somewhere north of $18 million, which is more than Chicago has spent so far this offseason to improve its roster. Nonetheless, the White Sox need a first baseman, and Trey Mancini can fill that role and then some.

Mancini has experience in the outfield and at first, but has proven he can operate well in the infield. Chicago’s current depth chart shows Gavin Sheets manning first, with perhaps some help from Andrew Vaughn if called upon. Surely, White Sox fans would be more comfortable with Mancini in that role, no?

Mancini was hitting .268/.347/.404 with 10 home runs during his time with Baltimore. The O’s flipped Mancini at the trade deadline due to his expiring contract, and he struggled with the Houston Astros, which could hurt his overall value.

That’s good news for the White Sox, as Mancini would be otherwise unaffordable had he played up to his All-Star potential in Houston. Chicago could argue to sign him to a short-term, high AAV contract, as Mancini might want to test the market again soon if he plays up to his own expectations in the south side.
