Yankees trade targets not named Fernando Tatis Jr. No. 2: Daulton Varsho, OF/C, Arizona Diamondbacks
lt’s no secret that the Yankees are in need of some outfield help. Judge will man right field, with Harrison Bader slotted in at center field. However, there is a void at left field, as Andrew Benintendi is a free agent. Considering he is the best option available as of this writing, he could command a contract more lucrative than what the Yankees are willing to offer.
With options behind Benintendi sparse, to say the least, the trade market could be the way to go. As it turns out, the Yankees have been linked to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are looking to trade one of their young outfielders this offseason.
With Alek Thomas, Jake McCarthy, and Daulton Varsho have been named, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. The Yankees should definitely target Varsho.
At 26-years-old, Varsho has shown his ability to defend in the outfield, play at catcher, and hit baseballs out of ballparks. At the plate, Varsho has recorded a .235 batting average, a .443 slugging percentage, 27 home runs, 74 RBI, 79 runs scored, and 125 hits in 151 games this past season with the Diamondbacks.
The thing with Varsho is that Arizona has a high asking price for him. That is what USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported when saying that the Diamondbacks were in talks with the Houston Astros for Varsho. Given that he’s under team control and his numbers this past season, it’s understandable why the Diamondbacks were asking for a lot.
If the Yankees value talent at an affordable price, Varsho may be the go-to. It could be difficult, but they should give it a shot.
