Coaches who need to update their resume after Week 15: Kliff Kingsbury, Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are in a very tough position. Just last season, after the Cardinals made the playoffs, the organization re-signed head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim to contract extensions that run through the 2027 season. Little did they know that the Cardinals would completely face-plant in 2022.

Arizona was one of the NFC’s biggest under-performers of the season, and that was with quarterback Kyler Murray starting. They were 4-9 on the season entering Week 15, and without Murray, who tore his ACL the week prior. The Cardinals were facing a Denver Broncos team that fell far below expectations under first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett and with Russell Wilson as their new quarterback. Much like the Cardinals, the Broncos weren’t playing their starter, instead opting to play Brett Rypien.

Kingsbury’s Cardinals lost decisively to the Broncos, who scored more than 20 points in a game for just the third time this season. In fact, the Cardinals made Rypien look like a more competent starter than Wilson, which could be true based on how he has played this season.

With the 24-13 loss, the Cardinals were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

When it comes to Kingsbury’s future, it could very well be in doubt. According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Cardinals are expected to part ways with Keim after this season. It’s unknown what the team would do with Kingsbury.

The Cardinals will have to evaluate everything this offseason to see what it could take to turn things around in 2023.
