3) The Red Sox starting lineup has gotten worse

The Red Sox lineup might have a lot of trouble scoring runs in 2023. Aside from Rafael Devers, who can they trust?

Trevor Story is coming off of a hugely disappointing season and we’ll have to wonder if Coors Field really did alter his numbers enough. Justin Turner is 38 and might be the most lateral addition they have made this offseason as a DH replacement for J.D. Martinez. We don’t know what to really expect from Masataka Yoshida who is coming over here from Japan. The Red Sox will have to hope he’s one of the international stars who does translate well. Otherwise, this offseason is going to get a lot worse.

It’s the holes the Red Sox have left in the lineup which gives them an edge over the San Francisco Giants for having the worst offseason in MLB. The lineup bottom four in the lineup could currently consist of Enrique Hernandez (CF), Triston Casas (1B), Christian Arroyo (2B), and Reese McGuire (C). It’s nearly half of the lineup. Compare this to other teams within the division and we already see a Red Sox schedule failing to go beyond 162 games.

There is time for the Red Sox to make more minor tweaks. Free agency won’t offer enough impressive upgrades for them. Making a blockbuster trade is out of the question, too. Throwing any single star onto this roster won’t make a difference. They’ve gone too deep into the offseason to crawl out of this one.
