Tom Brady backup plans: Geno Smith
Who knew we would see such a heartwarming story this season? Geno Smith went from career backup to Pro Bowler in the matter of minutes, it seemed. This season has gone by in a much different manner than many originally thought for the Seahawks.
Smith wasn’t even guaranteed the starting position after Russell Wilson was traded. It was going to be a competition between he and fellow veteran Drew Lock, who was younger and some thought might end up winning the job.
But here we are, looking at Pro Bowler Geno Smith. The Seahawks will have enough draft capital to gun for one of the top rookie quarterbacks in the 2023 class, if they so choose to. If Seattle doesn’t bring Smith back, then he’d be a great option for Tampa.
The Bucs have something in Brady that is very rare and difficult to find: the ultimate big game experience and leadership. While Smith can’t offer that big game experience at his age, he does have that leadership quality. There might be no better quote to come out of the season than when Smith was asked about his journey to this point:
"”My tough times would be a dream to someone else.”"
Talk about a guy with perspective. He’s grateful for his time in the league and has taken full advantage of this opportunity.
Smith’s 2022 campaign was downright impressive, as a whole. He has more than earned the right to start going forward, and if Seattle doesn’t keep him, then Tampa should be in on the Geno sweepstakes.
