Making sure Arenado did not use opt-out of contract

Before the World Series ended, Mozeliak went to Southern California to visit with Cardinals’ Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Arenado had a final opt-out option he could have used at the end of the 2022 season, which would have made him a free agent. Mozeliak and Arenado met to discuss where the All-Star stood on the Cardinals and his thoughts on remaining on the team.

Mozeliak and Arenado discussed the direction of the team and how the team would proceed with many concerns in the offseason.

While it is apparent Arenado is happy with the Cardinals organization, it was a relief to hear the Platinum Glove-winning player express that happiness and not use the opt-out. Arenado will remain with the Cardinals through the 2027 season, meaning he will not be a free agent until 2028.

This is terrific news, as Arenado’s glove is essential to the Cardinals’ defense. Arenado is a key bat in a stacked line-up. He is a tremendous clubhouse presence and a mentor to many of the team’s youngsters. In addition to his leadership, he has relationships with clubhouse leaders in Paul Goldschmidt, Adam Wainwright, and the Cardinals’ new bench coach, Matt Holliday.

Securing Areando’s place on the Cardinals was incredibly important.
