The Mets still don’t have a deal with Carlos Correa after flagging his physical for the same injury the Giants did, but fans should still have hope.

Few sagas have been as wild as Carlos Correa’s in the 2022 offseason. After first agreeing to a contract with the San Francisco Giants, that deal fell through after the team had a problem with an old injury discovered in his physical. That then allowed the New York Mets to swoop in and agree to a deal — only to then flag the same issue on his physical.

Since that time, the Mets and Correa have seemingly been in limbo. Correa’s camp doesn’t want to alter the terms of the initially agreed-upon contract while New York, obviously, wants to change something about the deal, whether that’s offset language, the length, or something else.

What’s been perhaps the most nerve-racking over recent days, though, is the little word from either side and the spectre hanging over the situation as another team could do exactly what the Mets did to the Giants by swooping in to strike another deal.

As of right now, though, the fans in New York don’t seemingly have all that much to worry about — at least not yet.

Carlos Correa update: No Mets deal, but no other teams involved yet

MLB insider Jon Heyman, who first broke the news in the middle of the night that Correa and New York had the initial agreement, reported reasons why the deal should still eventually get signed between the two parties. And it boils down to the fact that both the Mets and Correa want it to happen.

But what Mets fans should be most optimistic about is that Correa and agent Scott Boras have gotten calls from other teams and, per Heyman, have been turned away. According to the league insider, they want it to be only with New York as things currently sit.

Now, let’s be frank. With the way things have transpired up to this point, that aspect of the Correa negotiations should be considered fluid at best. However, it’s a good sign as of Dec. 30 that the shortstop and his agent don’t want other teams involved right now as they work to get something done with the Mets.

One thing Heyman did not update was the timeline for this deal getting completed as he used the word “eventually”. But given the nervous tension around Correa and New York right now, what he’s saying should relieve some of that for the time being.
