6. Khalil Herbert, Chicago Bears

In Khalil Herbert’s first game back from injury in Week 16, he only rushed six times for seven yards and caught two passes for -4 yards. The lack of involvement was likely due to him being eased back into the offense after missing several weeks. Before the injury, he was in a near-even timeshare with David Montgomery.

Herbert has been electric this season, showing true lead-back promise in games that he’s been given an extended opportunity. This week, expect Herbert and Montgomery to return to something similar to their timeshare that they were in earlier in the year, making Herbert an intriguing fantasy play against the 28th-ranked Detroit run defense.

5. Royce Freeman, Houston Texans

Since the injury of Dameon Pierce, it has been Royce Freeman who has become Houston’s lead back. His last two games have seen carries of 11 and 16, respectively. While he hasn’t done much with the carries, he’s at least dominating running back touches for the Texans.

The Jacksonville defense has been climbing over the last few weeks, so the matchup isn’t as favorable as it may have been earlier in the year. Still, if you’re looking for a starting running back who will get you 10+ touches this week, Freeman is an option, albeit an uninspiring one.
