The Chicago Bears offense has struggled despite the highlight plays by Justin Fields, but statistics confirm the obvious about the lack of help.

There are some across the NFL landscape that believe the Chicago Bears offensive line woes and their inability to protect Justin Fields are over-exaggerated.

As it turns out, those who believe the opposite are sadly mistaken. Statistics show that Fields was sacked 55 times this season. The sack rate is atrocious, and according to the stats, the new record for a QB who has started at least 14 games, surpassing David Carr’s rookie season record of 14.6% with 76 total sacks.

Now that Fields has been benched, it’s incumbent on the Chicago coaching staff and the front office to watch the tape from this season and make it a priority to sign offensive linemen to ensure that the amount of times that Fields has been sacked takes a nosedive to a lower number.

The Chicago Bears need to improve at the offensive line to preserve and protect Justin Fields.

With a boatload of cap space to work with and draft capital to acquire talent, it is highly likely that the Chicago Bears will be able to find some requisite help for Justin Fields and help him avoid the disaster that was the 2022 season.

At the same time, they must be careful. The league has increased the cap, and other teams are retaining their core players, leaving the free agent options thin. That doesn’t mean good players will still slip through the cracks. The Bears just need to be careful, and the right players have to be available before an investment is made.

The offensive line has to be a priority for the team. If not, Fields will be in deep trouble. The last thing the Bears want is to see is Fields running for his life and getting dragged down for sacks. Fix the issue, and never see it happen again. Simple, but needed.
