Lions rumors: Detroit will make a move at QB, but not the big one

Jared Goff played well enough to deserve another season as the starting quarterback. However, that doesn’t mean Brad Holmes should commit to him long-term.

Goff has an out in his contract this offseason, but if the Lions don’t take it, he’s only signed through the 2024 season. Detroit has a top-10 pick, and two firsts overall they could trade to acquire one of Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud or even Will Levis if they’re up for it. Doing so would give them their QB of the future, while also allowing Goff to pick up where he left off and lead Detroit to the postseason.

The former No. 1 overall pick is not the type of player who can win a Super Bowl. The Rams knew that when they traded him to the Motor City, as did Detroit. Nonetheless, Goff is a reliable presence in the huddle, and a team captain. It makes sense to keep him another two years and perhaps develop a younger talent alongside him.

That makes Nate Sudfeld expendable. It’s possible Detroit brings him back for a practice squad role, but it’s clear he doesn’t have much of a role on this offense besides an insurance policy.
