15) MLB Power Rankings: Baltimore Orioles should resolve to take the next step
The American League East is going to remain a tough division. In fact, the whole American League seemed to get better. This will prove challenging for a Baltimore Orioles team on the rise. They were originally a team believed to be a contender for one of the big name free agent shortstops. Instead, their offseason has included much lesser moves. They’re going to try to grow from last year’s success with a lot of last year’s players. Will it work? They fall right in the middle of this week’s MLB Power Rankings because of the 50/50 chance of the results.
14) MLB Power Rankings: Miami Marlins should resolve to trade a pitcher for the right bat
The Miami Marlins have a lot of really good young pitchers. Seriously. Have you looked at them? Even beyond Sandy Alcantara, the Marlins have pitchers to trade for a bat. Their New Year’s Resolution is to trade one of them for the right hitter. It’s a trade they can only make once. They need to nail it. Find the best trade offer out there and don’t hesitate. Your future may depend on it.
13) MLB Power Rankings: Chicago White Sox should resolve to be better than average
At least a really bad baseball team can look at trading away its veterans for prospects or landing a star earlier on in the draft. When you’re average like last year’s 81-81 Chicago White Sox, there isn’t much to enjoy. They need to be better than just .500. They have it in them. Breakout campaigns from Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert can do it. A healthier season from Tim Anderson goes a long way. Lucas Giolito becoming a stud again might be enough on its own.
12) MLB Power Rankings: Milwaukee Brewers should resolve to not fall apart midseason
Shakespeare wouldn’t be cruel enough to write a tragedy like the one the Milwaukee Brewers succumbed to last year. They had the National League Central lead for a large part of the year. After losing it, they dropped out of the wild card spot and would finish a game out. Not falling apart midseason should be their goal. We know they’re good enough to be in the thick of the postseason race. They should resolve to finish what they started.
11) MLB Power Rankings: Minnesota Twins should resolve to take advantage of a weak AL Central
The American League version of the Brewers last year, the Minnesota Twins, had an even worse collapse. They fell way out of the playoff picture. Even the White Sox had a better record in the end. This year, they need to take full advantage of a weak AL Central still featuring the Tigers and Royals going nowhere. The more balanced MLB schedule should factor into the standings. Games against everyone but more versus the Tigers, Royals, and even the beatable White Sox and Guardians is an opportunity the Twins cannot let pass them by.
