NFL rumors: Packers should sign a stable veteran

If Jordan Love isn’t ready just yet, then perhaps Green Bay should sign a stable veteran presence to a short-term deal. Someone like Jimmy Garoppolo makes a lot of sense for the Packers, as he has experience starting above a high-profile prospect who is very clearly in the team’s long-term goals.

Trey Lance was selected No. 2 overall despite Garoppolo having led the 49ers to the Super Bowl. Though they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in that appearance, Jimmy G was stable all year. He’s just not the kind of player who can win the big game without a lot of help.

Garoppolo won’t force the ball into tight spaces or turn the ball over much. He also doesn’t have the talent level to do so, or make memorable fourth-quarter comebacks on his own. He’s not the shiny new toy, but rather the memento in the back of the closet.

Garoppolo is talented enough to start in this league, and the Packers have a backfield featuring Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. Their young receiving corps can make plays in space and excels in yards after the catch. Matt LaFleur should be able to design some creative plays for that kind of offense. With Love, meanwhile, he’d have to protect his quarterback.

Is that really what the Packers should be focused on given their current roster construction?
