2. The Phillies just added Yunior Marte, but will he stay?

Another guy who pitched some innings for the San Francisco Giants last year new to Philly, Yunior Marte was acquired via trade. He does have minor-league options left which will help him stick longer than Vasquez. And because he was a trade piece and not a waiver claim for free, Marte’s spot on the depth chart should be viewed more favorably.

This won’t save him in the long run. As a rookie Giants pitcher last year, Marte had a 5.44 ERA in 48 innings. Nothing about him seems all that promising. He did have a few nice seasons in the minors with ERAs in the 3.00s. This may regularly translate into a 5.44 ERA like we saw last year.

The Phillies have a lot of these Four-A type of relievers within the organization. Marte is on the older end. Unless the club gets sick and tired of Sam Coonrod, he might be the next most logical choice to DFA and remove from the 40-man roster.

To their credit, the Phillies haven’t built up a roster with limitations. Many of their DFA candidates can first be sent to the minors. It’s a matter of having better choices within the organization that could cost many of these players their job.
