Ranking NFL quarterbacks based on 2022: 29. Davis Mills, Texans
The Houston Texans were abysmal this season, but credit to the team for at least playing in a few competitive games down the stretch of the year. Davis Mills was put in a tough situation as a third-round pick in 2021, but has done just about as well as you could have asked or predicted. He wasn’t going to come in and set the football world ablaze, but he has been fine.
If you ask Chicago Bears fans, he was more than “fine” in the season finale, when he threw for 298 yards and a season-high three touchdowns on the Indianapolis Colts. Mills’ performance in that game lost the Texans the rights to the number one pick in the draft, but more importantly for him as an individual, Mills gave Houston just one last hurrah to think about before drafting a quarterback this spring.
Mills may not end up being a starting quarterback beyond this season, but like the aforementioned Heinicke, he could have a future in this league as a backup for a while. At the very least, the Texans have a guy they can count on in a pinch, or as a bridge for someone like Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud.
