3 Trevor Story replacements Red Sox can trade for after deflating injury
Go big or go home? Willy Adames is the home-run trade for the Red Sox to swing at
Throughout the confusing offseason for the Milwaukee Brewers, it’s felt like a monthly occurrence that Willy Adames has been floated in trade rumors. Often, it was in connection to the likes of Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson or Trea Turner as a potential backup plan on the trade market. But it does go to show that the 27-year-old Adames represents a big asset for most teams.
After being traded to the Brewers midseason in 2021 from, you guessed it, the Rays, Adames has been a terrific combination of power and relatively reliable hitting. In his last 279 games, he has an OPS of .786 with 56 home runs, 63 doubles, 171 RBI and 160 runs scored. Moreover, he showed impressive defensive prowess last year in Milwaukee with a 1.9 dWAR, which would be great for the Red Sox infield.
Of the potential options for Boston to trade for in order to replace Trevor Story during his injury, the most expensive in terms of the assets needed to make a deal would be Adames. At the same time, though, this is a team that would be wise to find a long-term solution at the position. Adames will be looking for an extension but he also represents the best option to be the long-term play for the Red Sox.
More importantly, Bloom said early in the offseason that Story would ideally be the team’s second baseman moving forward. Adding Adames would make that possible by the newcomer occupying short and comprising a truly dangerous middle of the infield.
