1. The injury can keep Montas fresh down the stretch

The Yankees will be more than happy to sacrifice a month (or more) of Montas during the regular season if it means they can get his best performance during the postseason. Keeping him on the shelf to start the year will serve to limit Montas’ workload before the stakes really become high for the Yankees.

The key here for the organization is to make sure Montas gets right. The team’s big-money signing of Carlos Rodon was designed, in part, to take pressure off Montas as he headed into his second year in the Bronx. The right-hander’s injury is only going to keep him further out of the limelight.

Expecting a pitcher who struggles with shoulder issues to throw 200+ innings as a starter is more of a hope than a plan. Missing a month or more of work should limit Montas’ potential workload to 150 innings or so. That should be a more manageable workload for him to consume before a hopeful playoff run.

Yankees fans need to exercise patience with this year’s team. Giving Montas time to recover in the regular season should make them a more dangerous postseason opponent. It’s far more important for the Yankees and Montas to be at their best in October than on Opening Day.
