3 Seahawks who won’t be back and best options to replace them
Injury-prone Rashaad Penny has already been replaced by the Seahawks
Another first-round pick by Seattle, Rashaad Penny also looked like a bust early in his career, but largely only due to his inability to stay healthy. Then came the end of the 2021 season as he finished the year with 749 yards on 119 carries and six touchdowns. That made him the starter coming into a contract year.
Unfortunately, Penny got hurt once again and then made way for first-year back Kenneth Walker III to come in and snatch the RB1 title. Now it remains unclear what will happen with Penny this offseason as he’s scheduled to be a free agent. But it does appear more likely that he’ll be left to walk as he could get a decent payday and Seattle has its new top running back.
It’s unfortunate to see healthy make this decision about a talented player, but it’s hard to retain a former first-round pick that can’t stay on the field.
Seahawks best replacement for Rashaad Penny
- D’Onta Foreman (Free Agency)
- Raheem Mostert (Free Agency)
There isn’t really much to say about this because, well, Penny was already replaced this season. While the former first-round pick was the starter prior to injury, rookie Kenneth Walker III took over thereafter and never looked back. He’ll be the starter moving forward for the Seahawks. The so-called replacement options would be actual backups to Walker, but I would much prefer Seattle to find high-upside free agent options like Foreman and Mostert than to use draft capital on another running back.
With that being said, re-signing Penny isn’t totally out of the question and, with this franchise, neither is drafting another running back.
