Brett Maher put himself in the history books in the worst way. Can the Cowboys fix it at this point in the playoffs?

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t need Brett Maher’s points in the Wild Card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but they might need them in future weeks if they have any hopes of making a Super Bowl run.

Maher put himself in the history books on the wrong end, becoming the first kicker to miss four extra points in a game (regular season or playoffs). Maher, who previously was on the right end of the history books for feats of multiple 60-yard field goals, is looking like a shaky option for the Cowboys moving forward in 2023.

Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy both have said they don’t expect the Cowboys will replace Maher, but they should at least be exploring options. The question is, though, what can they do?

Can Cowboys sign a new kicker in the middle of the playoffs?

Yes, the Cowboys (as well as any other team) are able to sign players in the postseason. If they so choose to do so, Dallas can work out kickers and sign any of them to the roster.

The only thing they can’t do after a certain point in the season is claim players off waivers and play them in the postseason. At this point in the season, waivers will not be in play.

Do the Cowboys have another kicker on their roster?

The Cowboys’ lone placekicker is Brett Maher. Bryan Corey Anger is their punter, and even back to his college days, he has no experience kicking field goals.

Do the Cowboys have a kicker on their practice squad?

The Cowboys also are without an additional kicker on the practice squad, leading them to fix the issue externally if they make any moves at all.
